Web Design Brookfield, WI - Wordpress Explained | Waukesha Web ...

If you have gone through our website a bit, you?ve probably noticed that we talk about WordPress a lot! It?s hard to fully explain the benefits of WordPress without showing someone first hand how amazing it really is, but we?ll do our best to explain it here in more detail to see if it?s a good fit for you.

WprdPress Explained by Lowcows Web Design Brookfield,WI

WordPress Explained: by Lowcows Web Design Brookfield,WI

WordPress and content management systems (CMS) like it are truely the future of web design. We personally use WordPress for our own site and suggest it to every Waukesha, Milwaukee, and Brookfield, WI Web Design client that walks through our door. Providing businesses with a way to update and manage their website is by far the most valuable marketing tool that money can buy these days.

What is a content management sysem (CMS)?

Content managament systems provide a way to easily manage text, images, and pages on a website at their core, yet work very similarly to smart phones in regards to apps, which I?ll explain later. Somewhere in between, companies like Lowcows are able to create website designs and tools that seamlessly integrate into WordPress allowing us to build sites with incredible functionality at a fraction of what it would have cost just five years ago.

The design

WordPress uses ?Themes? for the website?s actual design. There are thousands of free and premium themes out there that look great to begin with, and can also be customized to more closely fit a company?s brand. The other option is to custom design a theme specifically for a company. It?s hard to use the word ?theme? without it sounding like a generic template site, but they couldn?t be any more different. WordPress is what makes these websites so powerful and the design is a reflection of who we are as businesses. Everything about a WordPress Theme is designed to be modified to reflect the individual or business.

Plugins

Plugins for WordPress are very similar to apps for a smart phone. Different plugins can be installed on a WordPress site to perform various tasks. Example?s of plugins are photo galleries, social sharing buttons, email list signup forms, interactive maps, image sliders, polls and calendars just to begin with. There are literally thousands of plucins available for free. There are also thousands of great paid plugins as well that cost pennies on the dollar compared to hand coding the same feature. Having tools like these that are ready to be installed on a website saves business owners thousands compared to just five years ago. What we can complete in weeks these days would have taken us 6 months not that long ago. It?s truly a win, win for everyone!

Functionality

WordPress makes it very easy to manage your websites content. Once we train you to work with WordPress, it?s about as difficult as sending an email to update your pages. Just a few minutes a day will allow you to communicate with your clients like never before. We often preach to our clients that they need to give people a reason to come back to their website. We blog about different resources available to businesses online for the same reason a restaurant would post their specials, or a shoe store would advertise a sale. People need a reason to come back to a website, and WordPress makes it a practical to do so without costing a lot of time or money.

Compared to large corporate websites, we?re able to duplicate 95% of what you see on those sites at a fraction of the cost, and without needing special software or a full time IT person. WordPress currently has just shy of 70 million people using their CMS to manage their website. It?s literally changing the Internet right before our eyes.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about WordPress. If you?re looking for web design in Brookfield, WI, Milwaukee, or? Waukesha, please feel free to give us a call. We?d love to give you a personal, no pressure tour of WordPress!

Cory Monteith's mom tweets about son's death

Celebs

Aug. 3, 2013 at 11:41 AM ET

Immediately after the sudden and tragic death of "Glee" star Cory Monteith in mid-July, there was a period of respectful silence as friends and family tried to absorb what had happened.?

"Glee" is now heading back into production, and on Thursday more former co-stars began to speak up, as the show posted a memorial card on YouTube and Monteith's mother tweeted for the first time since her son's death:

McGregor also sent out several tweets?denying that an individual who had been "releasing articles related to my feelings and thoughts on how to take care of Cory's ashes has never been in contact with me."?

It's unclear exactly who McGregor was referring to, but Life & Style quoted a supposed cousin of the actor last week that McGregor planned to "spread some of the ashes in the different places he loved."

Additionally on Thursday, co-star Darren Criss appeared on "Conan" and spoke about working with Monteith. He said "it's been a very rough time," but added, "he will be severely missed. But I'm just so happy a guy like him got to touch as many lives as he did while we were lucky enough to have him."

Monteith died on July 13 in a Vancouver hotel of a mixture of a mix of heroin and alcohol and was reportedly cremated.?

Monteith's girlfriend Lea Michele, who had tweeted a photo of herself with Monteith on July 29, returned to work on "Glee" on Thursday and tweeted:

And the "Glee" cast also posted a short tribute "Memorial Card" on YouTube Thursday, which has already racked up nearly 850,000 hits.?

"Glee" returns on Sept. 26, then will go on a three-week hiatus.?

Documentary About MACC's First Artist-in-Residence Tonight | Maui ...

Before becoming the MACC?s first artist-in-residence, Wes Bruce created an installation ? a giant fort ? at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

The fort had an almost inexplicably profound impact on the artist as well as the community surrounding him.

A documentary about the piece, captured by award-winning filmmaker Bryan Bangerter, airs tonight at the MACC at 6 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theater.

We talked to Bruce to learn a little bit more about his project, his art, and his experience here on Maui.

Maui Now: What got you interested in making forts as art?

Wes Bruce: I used to make a lot of paintings, but decided I wanted to put a hold on making art because I wasn?t enjoying it that much.

That summer I was part of the staff at a camp in Northern California near Yosemite National Park, and for our final staff meeting I build a huge cardboard igloo / honeycomb fort and we all spent the night in it. It was the most connective and true thing I had made. It felt worth making because of the human interaction that occurred within it.

After that summer I was asked to be in an art show in San Diego based on some paintings the curator had seen. I said that I didn?t want to make any more paintings, but I would be willing to make a fort. That was five years ago.

MN: What is the installation featured in the film about?

WB: I am working out of a metaphor I call an ?inner architecture.? Each one of us keeps who we are in these metaphorical rooms within us: all of our past, present and potential futures, hopes, fears, relationships, joy and mourning. Picture being able to enter into rooms within yourself and finding places and experiences you might not have recalled for years. That?s that short version.

MN: What do I hope the viewer gets out of watching the film?

WB: I hope they realize who and what is important to their life story. I hope they are more curious about the world around them. I hope that a sense of wonder leaves with them.

MN: The press release also mentions the ?emotional fallout of the project.? That sounds heavy. What are they talking about?

WB: My mom and dad had some tension as the project the film was about was deeply personal. It was about vulnerability and the risks that accompany it.

MN: How did you come to be MACC?s artist-in-residence?

WB: Neida Bangerter, the gallery director, asked if I would be interested in coming over and creating an exhibition with them. In order to do that logistically I realized I would have to be here for a few months because of the time it takes, and the labor-intensive nature of the art.

I have a background in education so we put that into the equation and figured out a calendar that would allow me to not only build the exhibition, but also get to hang out and empower some young artists and teach / learn from them.

MN: What are you enjoying the most about Maui?

WB: I love a lot about Maui. I love finding things the board of tourism wouldn?t want / expect me to see: the grungy corners of the Maui central base-yard, industrial back alleys in Wailuku, or the red-dusted Puunene church next to the sugar mill.

I find a lot to be curious about in these places. I love learning about the migration of different plants to Maui, and their journey through thousands of miles of open water.

I love conversations with folks who have lived here a long time and can recall old sugar camps, and villages and what life was like. And I love the wilder parts of Maui, as well: exploring steep gorges in Kipahulu, climbing trees, and witnessing the Pacific make its never ceasing approach to rocky shores.

MN: Are there any culinary surprises Maui introduced you to that you never knew about before living here?

WB: I love Opihi!

My friend Brook grew up in Haiku and introduced them to me when we were swimming in Makena. You can eat them straight off the rock (or so I?ve been told: haha). I love the salty flavor and interesting texture.

?

?A Film About a Fort? airs tonight at the MACC in the McCoy Studio Theater at 6 p.m.

The event is free to the public and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and the artist after the film.

Bruce?s exhibition ?Taken By Wonder? will be in the Schaefer International Gallery September 8- November 2, 2013.

Thailand and China say no quick fix

South China Sea Dispute

Deutsche Presse Agentur August 2, 2013 4:17 pm

China will host a senior ministerial meeting with the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) on August 28-29 on establishing a Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea for handling the various territorial disputes between Beijing and the region that threaten another wise peaceful relationship.

"This step we are taking is a measure of our mutual partnership in managing our differences amicably as a member of one big family would do," Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul told a forum on the 10th anniversary of Asean-China strategic partnership.

"This is just the beginning of talks on the COC," Surapong said. "There are many details to work out so we may have to meet many times." China has in the past insisted that South China Sea disputes need to be handled bilaterally, and had refused to start negotiations with ASEAN on a Code of Conduct, arguing that a Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) had already been signed in2002.

"As far as the China side is concerned we wish to seriously discuss and steadily advance the COC process," said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, but, he cautioned, "it?s a gradual process from the DOC to the COC." Among the 10 members of Asean, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have territorial disputes with China in the area, which claims oil reserves of up to 30 billion tonnes and 20 trillion cubic metres of gas reserves.

The South China Sea is one of the few bones of contention between China and Asean.

Chinese investment in ASEAN amounted to more than 4 billion dollars in 2012, when bilateral trade amounted to 400 billion, making China Asean?s largest trade partner.

Yi acknowledged that China?s tremendous growth over the past 30years had created "certain suspicions" among its ASEAN partners. "Anyone could feel uneasy about a close buddy who has all of a sudden grown in to a big fellow," Yi said.

Looking for small RP group for Skype

Hello everyone. I'm new to this site, but not to role-play. I certainly plan to get into role-play here, but before I do that, I wanted to ask (and I hope this is the right spot for this) if anyone would be interested in committing to role-play via Skype. Skype is preferred; I really don't use AIM anymore.

The reason for Skype as a preference is because my boyfriend and I are interested in doing a "Soul Eater" role-play since getting into the series recently (no spoilers please, as we haven't finished it) and he is not fond of forum-based RP. We'd like a small group of people who would be able to be available later at night (around midnight EST), or if you're interested at all, just send me a message to ask questions or pitch ideas for it if you are interested in joining.

We have barely planned anything yet beyond the fact that I'd like to play a meister and he wants to be her weapon. We're just considering our characters and planning them presently.

As a guideline, here are some things to consider for a character and what we vaguely have in mind for the RP:
- Meisters should have a unique "meister ability" (akin to Maka's ability to see souls). It can be something unique that is reasonable in power, or something canon in the show.
- Weapons should have a unique "hook" (like Tsubaki's ability to change "modes"), but shouldn't outright copy the ability of another weapon outright.
- Each meister/weapon pairing should have its own unique Soul Resonance ability.
- People can RP both their meister and weapon if they'd like.
- When things get planned, the idea is to have consistently available missions as in the series that lead to a deeper plot, perhaps directly related to what happens in the series, something separate, or something set sometime after the events of the series.

Ultimately, I would just like a couple more people to make the story interesting instead of this idea being outright one-on-one, which, with my boyfriend, I don't mind one-on-one RP with him, but it would be nice to invite more people along.

Respond or private message me as much as you want! I'll probably be unable to respond until a bit later, as I have to work in a few hours, but thank you in advance for any replies.

Time Warner Cable loses CBS channels, CBS says first time dropped from cable

Time Warner Cable loses CBS channels, CBS says first time dropped from cable

Earlier this week negotiations between CBS and Time Warner Cable broke down and for a few minutes, channels started dropping from the cable service. An extension on the deadline brought channels back quickly, but time is up once again and subscribers are being greeted by the message above. The blackout applies to CBS in New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas, plus Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel nationwide. According to CBS, this is the first time it's ever been dropped from a cable system, and it has followed up with a note from Showtime claiming TWC removed the premium channel despite authorization to keep it while negotiations continue. Time Warner Cable has its own statement, claiming CBS has "refused to have a productive discussion" since the Tuesday morning extension in talks.

With the NFL season looming we'll see how long TWC is willing to push CBS.com (which some of you have reported is being blocked by CBS), Aereo and antennas as alternative solutions in these major markets and whether CBS is willing to live without the viewership. For now, subscribers missing The Doctors can check out a video from TWC explaining exactly what happens behind the scenes when channels go dark.

The Queen of Texas

Texas has done a lot of good for this country: the King Ranch and Texas-style chili. Dr. Pepper and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders. Rick Perry and Ted Cruz. Patrick Swayze.

Texas also gave America Sheila Jackson Lee. So let?s call it even.

Since 1995, Jackson Lee (D.) has represented Texas?s 18th congressional district, which comprises much of inner-city Houston. Now at least one group on Capitol Hill is eyeing her for higher office: The Congressional Black Caucus is recommending that Jackson Lee replace Janet Napolitano as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Jackson Lee is one of 32 House members who sit on the House Homeland Security Committee, which is her apparent qualification for heading up DHS. According to the CBC?s letter to President Obama recommending Jackson Lee, the congresswoman ?understands the importance of increasing border security and maintaining homeland security? ? which, if that is considered a qualification, sets the bar frighteningly low. Then the CBC adds that she would be a ?voice of reason? at DHS.

Sheila Jackson Lee is many things. ?Voice of reason? is not among them.

During the 2011 hearings on Islamic terrorism, held by Representative Peter King (R., N.Y.), Jackson Lee railed against them as ?an effort to demonize and to castigate a whole broad base of human beings.? She then lamented that the committee was not spending its time on genuine terroristic threats: ?the cold cases of the civil-rights movement,? for example. She encouraged the committee to hold hearings to determine ?whether Klansmen still roam today and terrorize individuals in parts of this country.?

And she also quoted herself. In the third person.

In Jackson Lee?s ideal world, September 11 was caused by a group of white-nationalist southerners in hoods. Or, perhaps, by embittered former plantation owners ? by whom she has, apparently, been personally victimized. Jackson Lee declared on the House floor earlier this year, ?I stand here as a freed slave because this Congress came together.? No, that is not out of context. And there is no context in which that quote would make sense.

It is, though, representative of Jackson Lee?s style: Make sweeping and unfounded accusations of racism first; ask questions?.?.?.?well, never.

In 2011, Jackson Lee insinuated on the House floor that Republicans opposed raising the debt ceiling because of racism: ?I am particularly sensitive to the fact that only this president,? she said, ?only this one, only this one has received the kind of attacks and disagreements and inability to work. Only this one. Read between the lines. What is different about this president?? It is ?because we elected the first African American president? that some states are now pushing for voter ID.

The House floor was apparently the proper platform from which to berate a Pepsi commercial that aired during the 2011 Super Bowl. In the ad for Pepsi Max, a black woman throws her soda can at her boyfriend or husband for glancing at an attractive white jogger; when he ducks, the can hits the jogger, and the couple scurries away. The ad ?showed a demeaning role for African American women,? said Jackson Lee.

She even complained that devastating natural disasters are used to promote racism, telling the Hill in 2003 that hurricane names are too ?lily white? and that ?all racial groups should be represented.? She suggested more hurricanes named ?Keisha, Jamal, and Deshawn.?

Beyond arguing that America should be directing its drone strikes at remaining grand wizards, Jackson Lee?s homeland-security expertise is scant, although she does have personal experience with one global hotspot: Jackson Lee was so impressed with Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, she told the Houston Chronicle when she arrived home from a 2003 ?fact-finding? mission in the Middle East, that she invited him to come speak in Texas. ?Let?s see what he can do,? she said of the strongman who, she enthused, ?even gave us a picture of him and his children.? A decade on, the world has seen exactly what he can do. In December of last year Jackson Lee called for his resignation. But that speaking invitation might still stand.

Jackson Lee has a soft spot for tyrants. In 2007, implying that she was among the ?many friends? of Hugo Ch?vez in Congress, she encouraged the Bush administration to repair relations with Venezuela. An excellent way to do that, she suggested, would be to end the ban on selling F-16 fighter-jet parts to Venezuela.

In 2000 Jackson Lee called for the end of economic sanctions against Iraq.

And if it is not enough that she has been habitually seduced by brutal dictators and has opposed nearly every defense measure brought before Congress during her career, there are also Jackson Lee?s moments of Bidenesque folly.

In 2010 she took to the House floor to celebrate that ?today, we have two Vietnams, side by side, North and South, exchanging and working. We may not agree with all that North Vietnam is doing, but they are living in peace.?

Five years earlier, during a visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, Jackson Lee asked a guide whether the Mars Pathfinder had managed to photograph the flag planted by Neil Armstrong in 1969. Needless to say, the rover missed it ? by several million miles. At the time Jackson Lee was one of the handful of House members tasked with setting America?s space policy.

At an NAACP event in Kansas City in 2010, she compared?the Tea Party to the KKK, remarking, ?All those who wore sheets a long time ago have now lifted them off and started wearing [applause], uh, clothing, uh, with a name.? Which is an apt description for Jackson Lee. But along with such penetrating insights she would also bring to DHS a reputation as one of the worst bosses on Capitol Hill, according to Jonathan Strong, now a reporter with National Review Online. She is known to throw tantrums, regularly screaming and swearing at her staff. A few years ago she effectively replaced one employee?s name with ?you stupid motherf***er.? ?It?s like being an Iraq War veteran,? one staffer said.

Jackson Lee made her thoughts clear to her onetime Capitol-office executive assistant, Rhiannon Burruss, years ago: ?I am a queen, and I demand to be treated like a queen.?

A gaffe-prone, race-baiting autocrat-appeaser who believes she?s royalty? On second thought, in this administration she?d fit right in.

? Ian Tuttle is an editorial intern at National Review.

A tropical storm has formed off of Baja, California, and is moving west toward the Central Pacific.

Tropical Storm Gil, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, is about 815 miles south-southwest of Baja and is headed west-northwest at 15 mph on a trajectory that could bring it into the Central Pacific next week.

The earliest Gil could enter the Central Pacific would be Monday or Tuesday, according to Tom Brichard, a senior forecaster at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. But he stressed it is too early to predict any possible effects for Hawaii.

Because the storm is still in the Eastern Pacific, it is being tracked by the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The current 5-day forecast shows Gil strengthening into a hurricane by Friday but weakening back to a tropical storm over the weekend as it nears the Central Pacific.

Behind Gil, another storm system is forming and has a 40 percent chance of strengthening into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center. It is moving west at 15 mph and is about 750 miles south of the tip of Baja.

The two storms come on the heels of the former Tropical Storm Flossie which gave the islands a glancing blow Monday. The storm brought heavy rain and thunderstorms, mainly to Hawaii island and Maui County, as it skirted past the island chain and gradually weakened to a tropical depression, then a post-tropical depression today.

'Weak' tornado touches down near Blair Road and Hwy, 174 in east Ottawa

A ?weak? tornado hit the east end during rush hour Monday evening, Environment Canada has confirmed.

The funnel cloud touched the ground, damaging more than a dozen trees at Pine View Golf Course, near Blair Rd. and Hwy. 174, around 5:30 p.m.

?This thing took down trees that are two to three feet (in) girth, a huge part of a maple tree, and then a significant willow tree, which was two to three feet in diameter and just ripped it down, like, snapped it like it was a twig,? said head golf professional Scott Mikkelsen.

Fifteen minutes earlier, it was ?relatively calm and sunny,?

?The wind picked up, the temperature dropped, and then the funnel cloud came rolling through, leaving a path of (damage).?

No one was on the course, which had been cleared for the third time that day due to stormy weather.

The tornado moved diagonally from one corner of the property to the other heading southeast, said Mikkelsen.

?You could see the actual path that it took. The grass was all beaten down.?

Overall, this was ?really not a big event in the grand scheme of things,? said meteorologist Peter Kimbell.

Forecasters didn?t see it coming, Kimbell said, noting it wasn?t on par with storms in the U.S. or even the microburst wreaking havoc in Petawawa on July 19.

?It is unusual? for Ottawa, said Kimbell, referring to a similar event near the Canadian Tire on Ogilvie Rd. in 2000.

Government NHS test with harsh news for London Trusts comes in for criticism

A government test which today revealed an NHS Trust in north London comes lowest recommended by its patients of any in the country has been criticised as being ?misleading?.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The NHS?s ?friends and family test? also found that Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust in east London was the least popular among inpatients as it became clear decisions on the presentation and calculation methodology were made by ministers at the Department of Health, not NHS officials.

The Patients Association said the test would ?not address fundamental failures? in the health service.

The results - published for the first time today - are ?confusing to navigate?, the charity said. Nine in every 10 patients who attended the hospital with the ?worst? A&E department in the country would recommend that their friends and family should seek treatment at the hospital.

Indeed Chase Farm Hospital in north London was the only accident and emergency ward in England to receive a ?negative? score, but of the 516 of patients who were asked whether or not they would recommend the hospital, 295 said they were ?extremely likely? and 167 said they would be ?likely? to encourage their loved ones to seek treatment there - a total of 89.5 per cent.

Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: ?It is so complicated and confusing to navigate from a patients point of view. I?m not sure how it?s going to help.

?No one wants to be ill - or indeed in hospital - so asking people to recommend a hospital is not like asking someone to recommend a hotel.

?Asking that question is not going to address some of the failures that there are in the NHS. This could really be seen as a smoke screen to cover some of the more fundamental issues that need to be addressed - like the issue around poor care that so many elderly people experience on a daily basis.?

An NHS England spokeswoman explained why patients who said they were ?likely? but not ?extremely likely? to recommend a service were treated as returning neutral answers, the reason Chase Farm Hospital has a negative score despite nearly 90 per cent of patients saying they would recommend it to loved ones.

She said: ?Decisions on calculation and presentation methodology were made by DH (Department of Health) ministers, informed by views of the NHS England and SHAs (Strategic Health Authorities), plus research commissioned from Ipsos MORI on stakeholder reactions to different calculation and presentation options.?

Prime Minister David Cameron launched the initiative last year, saying that the simple test would help under-performing hospitals in England to ?raise their game?.

And Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: ?Today marks an historic moment in the NHS. This simple survey will give us the information we need to celebrate the best in our NHS and root out poor care.

?By making these ratings public we?re giving patients the power to choose the best place for their care - and driving other hospitals to raise their game.?

The 7 Closing Mistakes Presenters Make - InfluenceOlogy

10X Business Letter

Dear Business Builder,

Today we continue with part 3 of our video series entitled, "The 7 Closing Mistakes Presenters Make Part".

Loving Living Giving Large,

Jeff Paro
Editor ? The 10X Business Letter

In our first video, we introduced the first mistake:

1.) Most presenters develop their content without thinking FIRST about their offer.

And in our second video, we introduced the second mistake:

2.) Most presenters feel uncomfortable talking about their offer at the end of the presentation.

In this video we will introduce to you mistake number # 3 which is very simple, yet super important?it is this one:

3.) Most presents run out of time during their close

And when that happens, they conversions decreases dramatically because now they rush during the close, they speak way too fast and they don?t allow enough time for the audience to make a decision.

I remember one time when I was speaking at a car dealership and got super excited about a couple of stories, and I ended up speaking more than I should. I went way too long. All I sudden I heard a voice in the speaker system ?the dealership is about to open, salespeople on the floor?, so the audience (car salesman) looked at me and said ?thank you Roberto? and they stood up and left the room! Not fun at all!

So what can you do so you never commit this mistake like I did?

First, practice your close and time it. Your close should be ingrained in your body. You should know exactly how long it is, for example: 3 minutes and 30 seconds, 4 minutes, 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Time it!

Second, you must track your time during your presentation, or have someone in the audience helping you track your time. Otherwise you may speak way long and commit this mistake

And third, have some transitional phrases ready to go, so in the event you went too long, or maybe the meeting organizer wants to cut you short, you can transition to the close immediately, anytime you want.

Here is a transitions phrase that you can use anytime during your presentation

Example: ?And that leads us to the most important part of the presentation: how we can really help you implement this information?

When you follow these 3 simple ideas, you will never run out of time during your close.

If you believe that presenting and speaking can advance your business, help you get more clients, and position yourself as the expert in your filed, feel free to visit out event page as www.infuencingfromthefront.com

And I will see you in our next video, video number 4.

Roberto

Reuters Twitter Account Hacked

A Reuters news service Twitter account appeared to have been hacked Monday, as the news organization suddenly began tweeting messages supportive of the Syrian president.

According to screenshots from the Atlantic Wire, a Thomson Reuters corporate Twitter account @thomsonreuters began posting pro-president Bashar Al-Assad images Monday evening, followed by a tweet reading, "Always via Syrian Electronic Army (@Official_SEA12) #Syria #SyrianElectronicArmy pic.twitter.com/67plhvWgDD."

A Thomson Reuters spokesman told The Wall Street Journal's Digits blog Monday night in an email: ?Earlier today @thomsonreuters was hacked. In this time, unauthorized individuals have posted fabricated tweets of which Thomson Reuters is not the source. The account has been suspended and is currently under investigation.?

In April, the SEA, a group described as "A collective of pro-Assad hackers and online activists," hacked an Associated Press Twitter account, leading to a drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The SEA also has hacked other news organizations including NPR, BBC and Al Jazeera.

HuffPost's Gerry Smith wrote at the time that the AP attack "showed how hackers are using so-called 'phishing' techniques to compromise Twitter accounts belonging to some of the most respected news agencies in the world, renewing questions about the social network's security measures."

Energy-efficiency, reuse of building space and material help Hoosac Valley earn LEED Gold

Hoosac Valley Middle and High School was recently awarded LEED Gold status, which means more than $800,000 for the school?s two towns. (Jennifer Huberdeau/North Adams Transcript)

Monday July 29, 2013

CHESHIRE - The energy-efficient design of the renovation of Hoosac Valley Middle and High School has garnered an LEED Gold certification -- and more than $800,000 for both Adams and Cheshire.

The school has been honored by the U.S. Green Building Council with its Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification - the second highest certification a building can achieve.

The project also won top honors for Margo Jones Architects and Tessier Associates, which received the 2012 Honor Award at the Western Massachusetts AIA Annual Design Awards Competition in December. The $40.6 million project was celebrated by the competition's judges for its "skillful re-use of existing materials, daylighting improvements and thoughtful detailing of interior spaces."

"When we began the project we were shooting for LEED Silver," said Brian Sutton, LEED AP and president of eCaerus Sustainable Solutions of Great Barrington, which served as the project's LEED consultant. "During the construction, we all kind of huddled on the side and decided to go that extra mile. Our company spent extra hours to make sure the project would reach the gold level."

To achieve LEED Gold certification, the project had to earn 60 credits, which are awarded for meeting certain sustainability and energy-efficiency benchmarks.

"So much time was spent on that in early design phase," he said. "We reused over 75 percent of the existing structure [built in 1971]. It's a great use of an existing building, as opposed to knocking it down and starting over."

One of the benefits of achieving LEED Gold certification, he said, is that the state School Building Authority (MSBA) reimburses 2 percent of total project costs for the achievement. For the Adams-Cheshire Regional School District, that totals $880,000, which will be split between the towns of Adams and Cheshire.

Some of the project's elements that helped achieve the certification include the 495 kWh photo voltaic solar array at the school, reduced energy consumption, regionally-sourced building materials, high-efficiency replacement windows and improved storm water management.

"What people can really appreciate about the site is that there is no light pollution -- it's a good thing for the neighbors and for the environment," Sutton said. "We reused the pool as a place to capture the rain water from the fields and are using it to flush the toilets. It's an excellent reuse of water and its reducing the impact on the fields and streams around the school."

He said the building is now performing at 40 percent less than code on energy consumption due to upgrades.

"The solar voltaic system is really impressive," Sutton added. "You can go online and see how much energy has been produced and the equivalent energy savings -- the comparative reduction in carbon dioxide emissions or the equivalent number of gallons of gas or smartphone changes."

According to the solar array's website, (http://www.solrenview.com/SolrenView/mainFr.php?siteId=1713), the array has produced 365 MWh since going online in December -- the equivalent of 32,237 gallons of gasoline or 67,54,170 smartphones being charged.

The building project team included eCaerus Sustainable Solutions, Margo Jones Architects, Tessier Associates, Hesnor Engineering Associates, Guntlow & Associates and Gilbane Inc.
