Isaac Insurance Claims Begin

Insurance claims from Hurricane Isaac are trickling in, with one estimate saying losses to insurers could total $1.2 billon.

AIR Worldwide, which models losses for insurers, says insurers could pay between $700 million and $2 billion depending on how much damage Isaac's winds and rains produce.

State Farm Insurance Cos., the largest homeowners insurer in Louisiana and Mississippi, says it has received more than 4,000 homeowners claims as of Friday. The company says it has also received more than 1,000 auto damage claims.

Other companies have received fewer claims. Bob Warner, claims manager for Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance, says loss claims don't appear to be coming in at a high rate.

FEMA says it won't have an estimate of federal flood insurance claims for weeks.

Financial Firms Face Subpoenas on Tax Strategy

The New York attorney general is investigating whether some of the nation?s biggest private equity firms have abused a tax strategy in order to slice hundreds of millions of dollars from their tax bills, according to executives with direct knowledge of the inquiry. The attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, has subpoenaed more than a dozen firms seeking documents that would reveal whether they converted certain management fees into fund investments, which are taxed at a far lower rate than ordinary income.

Among the firms to receive subpoenas are Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company, TPG Capital, Sun Capital Partners, Apollo Global Management, Silver Lake Partners and Bain Capital, which was founded by Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee for president.

Executives at some firms said they feared that Mr. Schneiderman, a Democrat with ties to the Obama administration, was seeking to embarrass the industry because of Mr. Romney?s roots at Bain. Others suggested the subpoenas might be part of an effort to recover more tax revenue for New York.

Margaret Thatcher power suits go under the hammer

LONDON (Reuters) - Seven suits worn by Britain's first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher before she took up office will go on sale for up to 1,500 pounds each on Monday.

A bright turquoise ensemble she wore on the day she was elected leader of the Conservative Party in February 1975 and a striking yellow dress and jacket are included in the sale by Christie's in London.

Other outfits include a gold and silver cocktail ensemble and a dark greatcoat with distinctive red lapel stitching.

"When you see the pieces in the flesh, the first thing that comes to mind is how powerful they are and how much they stand out," said a Christie's spokeswoman.

"It definitely shows that she was a woman in politics and she was making a name for herself and what she wore was a very important part of that."

Thatcher, 87, was Prime Minister between 1979 and 1990 - the "iron lady" as a Soviet journalist once called her for her uncompromising stance against foes both foreign and domestic.

Only a limited number of her personal items have ever been sold and her suits could fetch more than their 1,500 pound price tag after an exhibition showing the auction items have already attracted much interest, the spokeswoman added.

A black handbag Thatcher was carrying in a picture with former U.S. President Ronald Reagan sold for 25,000 pounds in a charity auction last year.

Liverpool's Carroll joins West Ham on loan

Liverpool striker Andy Carroll ended months of speculation over his future by joining West Ham on a season-long loan on Thursday.

Carroll's future at Anfield has been in doubt since Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted the England forward might be an awkward fit for the smooth passing style he wants the Reds to use.

West Ham and Carroll's former club Newcastle both made approaches for the 23-year-old several weeks ago and, after Liverpool failed to secure a better offer, it is the Hammers who have won the race for his signature.

The deal is likely to bring an end to Carroll's disappointing spell with Liverpool as West Ham have agreed an option to sign him on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee at the end of this season.

It is a major coup for newly-promoted West Ham and boss Sam Allardyce, who briefly worked with Carroll at Newcastle, and the forward could make his debut in Saturday's Premier League clash against Fulham at Upton Park.

"It's great to be here at West Ham and all signed up. I just can't wait to get started now," Carroll told the east London club's website.

"I want to be playing games and obviously hoping to score some goals. I know the manager well and some of the lads, so it is nice for me to come to a place where I know people.

"I'm hoping to add a lot of goals and create a few chances. I know Sam from Newcastle and he was a massive reason for me coming. When I worked with him at Newcastle it was great so it was a no-brainer really."

Liverpool's then manager Kenny Dalglish paid a club record ?35 million to sign Carroll from Newcastle in January 2011 as a replacement for Fernando Torres after the Spaniard joined Chelsea.

After scoring only 11 goals in 58 appearances, Carroll has been deemed surplus to requirements just 18 months later and Allardyce hopes to revitalise the striker's career at Upton Park.

"I think for all parties this is a great signing. Andy is an all-round footballer, but because he is tall and one of his strengths is his aerial power, everybody dismisses the ability he possesses on the floor," Allardyce said.

"Hopefully he can score goals for us and we will be in a very good position at the end of the year in the Premier League."
