Kite surfers inspire new wind-energy tech

1 day

Adrenaline junkies long ago learned that flying a kite with surf and snow boards strapped to their feet is an awesome way to get their fix. Now, energy companies are looking to harness the source of the fun???high altitude wind???to generate electricity.

The concept of kite power has been floating around for a few years based on the data-backed premise that winds are stronger and more consistent 1,000 to 1,500 feet off the ground than they are at 500 feet, which is about as high as the tallest traditional?wind turbines reach.

Devices built to harness that high-altitude wind hold the promise of greater operational reliability and efficiency as well as lower materials cost per megawatt of electricity generated.

Some approaches generate the electricity in the air, such as the airborne wind turbines from Google-backed Makani Power and MIT spinoff Altaeros Energies.?

This week, Berlin-based wind energy developer NTS GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute revealed details of a scheme to use a 215-square-foot kite to pull a vehicle along a train track. A generator converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electricity.

Automated measuring and control mechanisms on the vehicle are being designed to steer the kite in either a figure-eight or sine-wave flight path that can generate enough power to pull a vehicle that weighs one ton, according to a Fraunhofer.

To date, the system has been tested on 1,300-foot-long straight track as the kite was remotely controlled. Future automated versions will be on a loop track.

Simulations of the technology suggest 24 kites could generate 120 gigawatt hours of electricity a year, enough to supply power to around 30,000 homes.?The partners said they have attracted earlier investors and are at work turning the concept into reality.

Romney, Obama fight spiritedly into final weekend

HILLIARD, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney fought spiritedly into the final weekend of the marathon and unpredictably close 2012 campaign Friday, with sharpened closing arguments over which is the better man to lead the country out of economic doldrums.

Both candidates argued they were the true agent of change, facing a rival who may talk a good game without the right policies to deliver.

"Candidate Obama promised change, but he couldn't deliver it," Romney charged. "I promise change, but I have a record of achieving it."

Obama retorted that Romney is "a very talented salesman," trying to repackage the old-school Republican policies that left so many Americans in financial trouble. "We know what change looks like," Obama told an Ohio crowd. "And what the governor is offering ain't it."

Both candidates were plunging into a hectic pace of campaigning. Obama was eager to fend off Romney in the key battleground of Ohio even as Romney pushed to expand the contest to other states, most notably Pennsylvania, to secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

Obama directly took on Romney for the first time over the Republican's ads airing in Ohio on the auto industry bailout. The ads accuse Obama of taking General Motors and Chrysler into bankruptcy, selling Chrysler to an Italian company and building Jeeps in China. Chrysler and GM have protested the ads and disputed the suggestion that Jeep construction was being moved overseas. But the Romney campaign is standing by the ad.

Obama told Ohio voters that Jeep plant workers were calling their bosses to ask if they were going to lose their jobs. He said Romney was playing a game with people's lives to try to win the election.

"So you don't scare hard-working Americans just to scare up some votes," Obama said. "That's not what being president is all about. That's not leadership."

Each candidate got new evidence to bolster his closing argument from Friday's economic report showing more job creation and an uptick in unemployment. The Labor Department reported that U.S. employers added 171,000 jobs in October and that hiring was stronger over the previous two months than first thought. The unemployment rate inched up to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in September because the workforce grew.

As an economic marker, the report sketches a picture of a job market that is gradually gaining momentum after nearly stalling in the spring. As a political marker, it gives Romney a data point to attack. Obama will face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any incumbent since Franklin Roosevelt.

"We are four days away from a fresh start," Romney said in a speech in West Allis, Wis. The former Massachusetts governor rarely speaks from prepared text at his political rallies but was doing so as he delivered a new final pitch.

Romney ticked through his achievements ? building one business, turning around another, putting the Olympics back on track and political cooperation with a Democratic Legislature. He warned that an Obama re-election would threaten another government shutdown and national default.

"I know when I am elected, the economy and the American job market will still be stagnant, but I won't waste any time complaining about my predecessor," Romney said. "I won't spend my effort trying to pass partisan legislation that's unrelated to economic growth. From Day One, I will go to work to help Americans get back to work.

Although the jobs report alone is unlikely to sway voters, it comes amid other signs that the economy is on the mend. Most important, consumer confidence is at its highest level since February 2008, according to the Conference Board. Other signposts this week showed auto companies with sales gains in October and increases in factory orders and production.

"We've made real progress, but we are here today because we know we've got more work to do," Obama said. "Our fight goes on."

Ohio loomed large on the campaign calendar Friday, with both sides trying to motivate every voter they can. Obama reached beyond the big cities and concentrated on smaller venues, while Romney was holding larger rallies up to an evening kickoff for the final campaign weekend with running mate Paul Ryan, their wives and performer Kid Rock.

"This will probably be a turnout election," Romney told about 1,000 supporters who waited outside the pavilion where he spoke in Wisconsin because they couldn't fit into the room.

But while Ohio was emerging as the most contested state in the final push, Romney and the Republican Party were launching a new drive into Pennsylvania, which had been considered safely in Obama's column. Romney planned to campaign there Sunday and the Republican National Committee was putting $3 million in ads into Pennsylvania.

Romney aides said they detected that Obama was underperforming in the southeastern counties around Philadelphia, a usual Democratic stronghold, and in the working-class area in and around Scranton. Obama won the state handily in 2008, largely on the strength of his performance in the eastern part of the state. The RNC, however, says its voter outreach program has already exceeded its performance four years ago, with three times more phone calls and 19 more door knocks than at this time in 2008.

Obama aides dismissed the eleventh-hour move as an act of desperation that underscored Romney's weakness in other battlegrounds but said the Democratic campaign would increase its ad purchases in the state to respond to the RNC incursion.

Amid all the signs of escalation, there also were signs that Election Day was nigh.

Outside the White House, workers had begun erecting fencing on Pennsylvania Avenue, setting the groundwork for building the inaugural viewing stand and the camera platform in nearby Lafayette Park.

Nanosilver from clothing can pose major environmental problems

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? Silver nanoparticles can have a severe environmental impact if their utilisation in clothing continues to increase. If everyone buys one silver nanoparticle-treated sock a year, the silver concentration in waste water treatment plant sludge can double. If the sludge is subsequently used as fertilizer, the silver can cause long-term damage to agricultural land. These are the results of a study conducted at Chalmers University of Technology.

Chalmers researcher Rickard Arvidsson recently defended his doctoral thesis, which addressed the risks associated with nanomaterials -- a field with a great many knowledge gaps. He has developed new methods to assess the risks of nanomaterials, as well as used the methods on a few specific materials such as silver nanomaterials.

Silver nanoparticles have an antibacterial effect, and are used in a variety of consumer products such as workout clothing to prevent the smell of sweat. When the clothes are washed, nanoparticles are released and enter waste water treatment plants through waste water. The particles release silver ions that cannot be broken down at waste water treatment plants or in nature. The silver ions are toxic to many organisms.

"Clothing is considered to be a large source of nanosilver emissions already," says Rickard Arvidsson. "If silver usage in clothing continues to increase, the consequences for the environment can be major. For example, silver can accumulate in soil if sludge from waste water treatment plants is used as fertilizer, which can result in long-term damage to soil ecosystems."

Utilising sludge as fertilizer in soil is a way to restore phosphorus from waste water to agricultural land. There is a global shortage of phosphorus, but if sludge is to be used as fertilizer, contaminated content must remain at a low level.

Rickard Arvidsson conducted a study at Gothenburg's waste water treatment plant in Sweden. The study shows that the effect on sludge, and agricultural land if sludge is used as fertilizer, is entirely dependent on the amount of silver that manufacturers use in clothing. The silver concentration in the examined clothing varied by a factor of one million -- between 0.003 mg/kg and 1400 mg/kg. With the lowest concentration, there would not be an observable effect on sludge and soil even if the utilisation of silver in clothing increased significantly.

"With the highest concentration, however, it would suffice if all of the city's residents bought and used one silver nanoparticle-treated sock a year for the silver concentration in waste water treatment plant sludge to double," says Rickard Arvidsson.

"Using silver in clothing is a new technology, and it is still difficult to ascertain patterns for how much is being used. However, if the negative environmental impact is to be avoided, either the silver concentration in clothing or consumption of silver nanoparticle-treated clothing must be limited."

Obama, Republican Christie tour storm-hit New Jersey, trade praise

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (Reuters) - Putting aside partisan differences, President Barack Obama and Republican Governor Chris Christie toured storm-stricken parts of New Jersey on Wednesday, taking in scenes of flooded roads and praising each other for their response to superstorm Sandy.

Riding in the Marine One presidential helicopter, Obama and Christie got an aerial view of some of the hardest-hit areas of the New Jersey shoreline, and afterward the president promised to cut through red tape to help storm victims.

Despite being a top surrogate for Obama's rival Mitt Romney in the November 6 election, Christie kept up his compliments about Obama for guiding federal support during and after the devastating storm, which also crippled New York City and other parts of the eastern seaboard.

"I cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and his compassion," said Christie, known for his blunt, in-your-face political style, after the two men completed their tour.

He said the affected areas needed clean drinking water, restored power, and children back in school. "I discussed all of those issues today with the president and I'm pleased to report that he has sprung into action immediately to help get us those things while we were in the car riding together," Christie said.

Obama has suspended campaign events since Sunday while overseeing federal relief efforts and holding public events to show Americans he is focused on handling a major natural disaster instead of pressing his quest for a second term.

He returned the praise from Christie, seen by some Republicans as a potential presidential candidate in 2016.

"Governor Christie, throughout this process, has been responsive, he has been aggressive in making sure that the state got out in front of this incredible storm," Obama said, calling the Republican's leadership "extraordinary."

Obama said restoring electricity was a top priority.

"We are here for you and we will not forget, we will follow up to make sure you get all the help you need until you rebuild," he said.

U-TURN BY CHRISTIE

The storm and the government's relief efforts have prompted a U-turn in the tone of Christie's rhetoric about Obama. The New Jersey governor leveled harsh criticism at Obama during a keynote speech at the Republican convention in August.

But all that has changed with the damage wrought by Sandy, which bashed the mid-Atlantic coast on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Christie said Obama's response to the storm damage in New Jersey was "outstanding."

With an extremely close election looming on Tuesday, Obama has remained in the public spotlight, while Romney has had to suspend campaign appearances to avoid coming across as overly political while millions of people were affected by the storm.

Romney was back campaigning on Wednesday, but his campaign seemed at a loss about how to deal with Christie's praise of Obama.

Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden, asked by reporters whether he agreed with Christie that Obama was doing a good job handling the hurricane response, said: "I believe the response is still going on so I'm not in a position to qualify the response by the federal government. I believe it's still ongoing."

Obama is set to resume campaigning on Thursday with visits to Nevada and Colorado, followed by stops on Friday in Ohio - considered the most critical election swing state.

From the air in and around the gambling resort of Atlantic City, Obama saw whole streets underwater, beachfront homes swamped by flooding and piers partially blown away.

He also saw the still-burning remnants of about eight homes set afire during the 1,000-mile (1,600-km) -wide storm, the biggest to hit the U.S. mainland in generations.

"If your homes aren't too badly damaged we can hopefully get you back in," Obama told residents at an evacuation shelter in the town of Brigantine. "The entire country's been watching. Everyone knows how hard Jersey has been hit."

J&J restoring cancer drug supply to EU patients

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Johnson & Johnson is making more headway in restoring supplies of a crucial cancer drug unavailable to many patients since the contract manufacturer producing it, Ben Venue Laboratories, shut down a year ago due to serious contamination and other quality problems at its Ohio factory.

Access to Doxil, or Caelyx as it's called in the European Union and some other places, had been limited to existing patients since last fall amid dwindling supply. The drug treats advanced breast and ovarian cancers, the bone marrow cancer multiple myeloma and Kaposi's sarcoma, a blood vessel cancer. For many patients, it was the only effective option.

A J&J spokeswoman said Wednesday that new stock of Caelyx is now available to at least some new patients in Europe. That's after the European Medicines Agency approved an arrangement under which Ben Venue will do the initial manufacturing steps and another company will then handle sterile packaging of the injected drug into vials.

Doctors in European Union countries are being notified to use a new Internet-based ordering and reservation system for Caelyx.

"We're now slowly building up stock and we are organizing access via this online portal ... on a first-come, first-served basis," Satu Glawe, a spokeswoman for J&J's Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. unit, said Wednesday.

Preference will go to EU patients currently taking the drug, then to new patients without other options and finally to other new patients, she said. The company will resume supply in other countries after getting approvals there.

A week ago, Janssen ended its rationing of Doxil, known chemically as doxorubicin hydrochloride, for American patients. The company hopes to soon have approval from the Food and Drug Administration for a manufacturer to handle sterile vial filling in the U.S. for Doxil produced by Ben Venue, which makes sterile injectable drugs at its Bedford, Ohio, complex.

A subsidiary of German drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim, Ben Venue said on Oct. 16 it had resume limiting manufacturing at the Ohio plant, where it's investing more than $300 million in upgrades. Still, most products it makes there won't be available for several more months.

The Ben Venue supply problem comes amid more than three dozen recalls by Johnson & Johnson since September 2009 for products it manufactures, from Tylenol and other nonprescription drugs to prescription medicines, contact lenses and defective hip implants.

Among the most recent recalls is one from August ? just announced recently ? involving three brands of staplers used in hemorrhoid and rectal surgery. According to the FDA, the devices can misfire, causing incomplete staple formation that can result in death, severe pain, bleeding, infection and damage to or blockage of the rectal canal.
